L and M Design Lab's inspiration for the Fibonacci Spiral project stems from the natural beauty and mathematical precision of the Fibonacci spiral. The design breaks away from the monotonous grid structures typically found in urban landscapes, instead connecting flourishing boulevards and embracing a plethora of public activities. The spiral begins at the South Waterfront Headquarter Building and extends across the site, creating a dynamic and engaging environment.
The project's unique properties lie in its strategic location, surrounded by rivers that form several islands. The most notable of these is the Dynamic Island at the center. Its circular podium sequences, extending to the tower, form the vitality core of the project, both formally and functionally. Once completed, the project will serve as the demonstration base for Shanghai's intelligent medical innovation, offering over 500,000 sqm of workspace for subdivisions of intelligent medicine.
The Fibonacci Spiral project is designed with high efficiency and resource conservation in mind. The concentrated formation ensures that all areas are easily accessible, with the Dynamic Island hosting a variety of functions such as restaurants, shopping malls, and fitness rooms. The road network, based on the Fibonacci spiral, is planned for automatic drive, further enhancing the project's innovative features.
The project covers an area of 340,000 sqm and is designed to accommodate a variety of waterfront spaces, creating a diverse range of public spaces. The design team, comprising Liu Jinrui, Guo Lan, and Feng Qiong, faced the challenge of creating a vibrant space on the city outskirts, a feat they accomplished with the Fibonacci Spiral project.
The project was designed between April and August 2018 in Shanghai. It is located in a low-density area near SHTU, ensuring a concentration center against the low-rise background. The core provides various life services for the campus and surrounding residents, including a public-oriented testing center and an exhibition center that works in coordination with the Medical Big Data Group in the northwest.
The Fibonacci Spiral project has been recognized for its innovative design and was awarded Silver in A' City Planning and Urban Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, further cementing the Fibonacci Spiral project's place in the realm of urban design.
